It is a beautiful thing to live here in Sunny Florida. In fact, that is why so many of us live here! But with many good things, there is often a downside.

The downside to the sun is its effect on our homes. Especially if you are moving here from an area in the country where it wasn’t nearly as sunny, or if you are from up North, you may be shocked by how the sun destroys things here.

The roof of a home is one of the biggest areas affected. A shingled roof does not last nearly as long here in FL as it does in other parts of the country.

Everything is affected though. Siding, windows, driveways, and anything exposed to the suns rays. So what can you do when you live in sunny Florida to help protect your home?

Well, we can’t put an umbrella over our homes, so the outside of our houses will have to fend for themselves. But using sun resistant products does help. Make sure you use good quality siding and roofing material that will last in the sun. Many people here in Florida use tiled roofs or metal roofs. Stucco is also common here, as vinyl (as a general rule) does not last as well.

When thinking about window treatments on the interior of your home, try to use something that will keep the sun out during the heat of the day. Many floors, furniture, and more have been ruined by light coming through the windows. Using low-e windows helps, but be careful, as reflected rays can damage other items – or even your neighbors home if it is close enough.
